Yesterday afternoon we had a few hours to kill so we
decided to try to get to Wal-Mart once again. This would be our THRID attempt!
We were more confident this time because we knew the name of the bus to take
and what direction it needed to be going. Once we got on a bus I made sure to
ask the man if this was the correct “Tres Rios” bus that would take us past
Wal-Mart. He had greasy curly hair and looked a little sketch but what bus
driver doesn’t so I figured we could trust the little rat! He hesitated for a
moment and then told us “yes, of course we would go that way” and then
proceeded to charge us each 270 colones. The bus was jam packed so all 5 of us
were single file in the aisle and hanging on to the grimy little bars on top.
All of a sudden, Liz, who was in the front standing next to the bus driver
turned around and told us that the bus driver just got done telling her this
bus actually wouldn’t go past Wal-Mart. Are you serious?! He then pulled over,
opened the door, and dumped us off on the road. Before getting off I was like
“but I asked you!” He just gave me a smirk and shrugged his shoulders. That
little nappy headed jerk knew all along he wouldn’t go past Wal-Mart and just
wanted our money. So, now, being on the side of the road we decided screw it…we
will WALK THERE!!! I went into some car place and asked the people at the desk
which road we could take that would put us in the correct direction for
Wal-Mart. They both looked astonished that we would be walking there as it was
super far away! But, they told us to take a left at the fork and keep walking.
We walked, and walked, and walked. Every fork in the road we would ask another
person which side to take and they would all give us directions after
expressing their surprise that we had decided to walk to Wal-Mart because it
was “sooo far away”. Then, out of nowhere came a poor, wet, malnourished puppy.
This little pup accompanied us the ENTIRE way! It would even wait for us at the
corners so we could catch up! So cute! We walked some more along the highway
and received gross cat calls and honks the whole way. FINALLY, there in the
distance, was the Wal-Mart sign all Americans know and love! We walked inside
and the poor puppy knew not to go in but just looked at us with big, sad eyes.
Needless to say my heart broke into a million pieces. But, their Wal-Mart
looked very similar! We sat down at the café and got some chips and pop to
refuel ourselves and then we bought some groceries. Once we got out of there,
we decided it would be best to take the bus back. We crossed the street and
guess who was running behind us. The poor, homeless puppy! He had waited
outside Wal-Mart that whole time! When we got on the bus he again just watched
us with his big, sad eyes and my heart broke once again! But, we made it home
with Costa Rican Wal-Mart bags in hand. FINALLY!
