Just Another Fun-Filled Week!

Last week was a pretty fun-filled week if I do say so myself! Tuesday night we were able to go to the national stadium for the soccer game between Costa Rica and Panama. Talk about a zoo! We all dressed up in Costa Rica jerseys and headed down there in a bus. Once we got there we waded through all the people to get up to the gate only to be told we were on the wrong side of the stadium! At this point, it began to pour!!! And we weren’t allowed to bring umbrellas into the stadium so I just embraced the rain and wet-dog look for the night. We turned around and started to walk around the stadium. We cut through this field and then came to a narrow opening that led us to the gates of the stadium. In order to get through the opening we had to climb along the fence because the sidewalk was completely filled with people walking in the opposite direction! Finally, though, we all made it to our seats. The game started and the rain still didn’t let up! So, as one can imagine, the stairs and aisles were really wet and a man was walking down the aisle right by our section with a huge tray of drinks he was trying to sell. All of a sudden he slipped and took one heck of a fall onto the cement stairs. I looked over expecting to see him get up and he didn’t. He was just lying there and those really close to him said he was even crying. I felt soooo awful for the poor guy because someone had said they thought he broke his back. Us, along with many others in our section, motioned to the security guys to come and it literally took a good 5-7 minutes for anyone to even come down and help him out. They then took him out on a really old looking back board with just one teeny tiny little strap. I felt so bad for him and really hope he is doing well!  But, besides that poor man, the game was really fun! Costa Rica won 2-0 and both goals were scored right in front of our section!
We met at Plaza Cristal to get on the bus

The very next day, Wednesday, we were able to get out of class and head to see a volcano and some Hot Springs. The bus ride was 4 hours each way which was actually super nice because I was pretty tired since I had stayed up late at the game the previous night. When we got to the little town of Fortuna we stopped to eat at a restaurant which had some pretty awesome food! At first, I took one look at my chicken and thought “Greaaattt this looks pretty darn sketch”. But to my surprise, when I cut into it, it actually was super juicy and tasted great! Even better than the chicken, though, was the vanilla ice cream! It tasted homemade and was super fantastic! We then got back on the bus and drove up through the mountains and stopped at a point where we were able to get out and see the volcano. We couldn’t see too much though because it was a little foggy out. After this, we were taken to a resort called “Baldi Hot Springs and Spa”. This place was beyond awesome! It has somewhere close to 20 pools of natural hot water due to the volcano that is nearby. The higher you climb, the hotter the springs get. It was also so gorgeous because there were so many trees and rocks and other types of plants! They also had 3 water slides. Two of them were for adults and one was for children. I definitely found out why it was not advised for children to ride the two designated for adults! Holy cow! You flew so fast through those things and would just come flying out at the end! One girl in our group ended up with a fat lip! But, at the end of the day, everyone survived and we made it back to San Jose by about 10:30 pm. Which as sad as it is to say was past my usual bedtime here!

Wal-Mart attempt #3

Yesterday afternoon we had a few hours to kill so we decided to try to get to Wal-Mart once again. This would be our THRID attempt! We were more confident this time because we knew the name of the bus to take and what direction it needed to be going. Once we got on a bus I made sure to ask the man if this was the correct “Tres Rios” bus that would take us past Wal-Mart. He had greasy curly hair and looked a little sketch but what bus driver doesn’t so I figured we could trust the little rat! He hesitated for a moment and then told us “yes, of course we would go that way” and then proceeded to charge us each 270 colones. The bus was jam packed so all 5 of us were single file in the aisle and hanging on to the grimy little bars on top. All of a sudden, Liz, who was in the front standing next to the bus driver turned around and told us that the bus driver just got done telling her this bus actually wouldn’t go past Wal-Mart. Are you serious?! He then pulled over, opened the door, and dumped us off on the road. Before getting off I was like “but I asked you!” He just gave me a smirk and shrugged his shoulders. That little nappy headed jerk knew all along he wouldn’t go past Wal-Mart and just wanted our money. So, now, being on the side of the road we decided screw it…we will WALK THERE!!! I went into some car place and asked the people at the desk which road we could take that would put us in the correct direction for Wal-Mart. They both looked astonished that we would be walking there as it was super far away! But, they told us to take a left at the fork and keep walking. We walked, and walked, and walked. Every fork in the road we would ask another person which side to take and they would all give us directions after expressing their surprise that we had decided to walk to Wal-Mart because it was “sooo far away”. Then, out of nowhere came a poor, wet, malnourished puppy. This little pup accompanied us the ENTIRE way! It would even wait for us at the corners so we could catch up! So cute! We walked some more along the highway and received gross cat calls and honks the whole way. FINALLY, there in the distance, was the Wal-Mart sign all Americans know and love! We walked inside and the poor puppy knew not to go in but just looked at us with big, sad eyes. Needless to say my heart broke into a million pieces. But, their Wal-Mart looked very similar! We sat down at the café and got some chips and pop to refuel ourselves and then we bought some groceries. Once we got out of there, we decided it would be best to take the bus back. We crossed the street and guess who was running behind us. The poor, homeless puppy! He had waited outside Wal-Mart that whole time! When we got on the bus he again just watched us with his big, sad eyes and my heart broke once again! But, we made it home with Costa Rican Wal-Mart bags in hand. FINALLY!

Spending Some Time Outside the City

The first full weekend we were here (June 7-9) we went on our first excursion outside San Jose. Right after class on Friday a bus picked us up and drove us two hours to Jaco where we stayed the weekend in an all-inclusive resort! They had a pool and it was also located right on the beach. We arrived at about 3 pm on Friday and spent the rest of the day walking the beach and sitting by the pool. On Saturday we literally got up at 9 am, ate breakfast and spent all morning and afternoon lying out in the sun by the pool and on the beach! Needless to say, I got a little pink. Okay, a little more than pink…I was kinda fried. That night, we showered and put on some dresses and headed to the little restaurant area with the rest of the UNK students. Amanda, Mary, and I had been looking all over for Liz and Fin but figured they must have went out to explore the town or were in their room using the (thankfully free wifi!!!) to skype their parental units. Well, all of a sudden on the bridge leading up to the restaurant, there they were, walking up to join us. So, ecstatic to see that Liz and Fin were neither dead nor raped, Mary and I went running to them to give them hugs! Mary hugged Fin and I hugged Liz. Well, remember we were on a bridge. We somehow lost our balance and started to teeter totter. At first, the rope on the edge of the bridge caught us but next thing I know, we were both falling over the edge of the bridge, hitting a sign, and landing in the plants below. Yikes! I was also wearing a dress, so as you can imagine, my legs were spread eagle as it was not a very graceful fall and the whole world got a glimpse of my white and red underwear. Liz and I were both just lying there heads in the plants and laughing our butts off. We could not believe it! Neither could anyone in the restaurant because they had all seen it happen and came running out and were standing up on the bridge just staring. I was left without a scratch and poor Liz has been nursing her scraped up leg and bruised ankle ever since. The next morning, we got up, ate some breakfast, walked around the beach, and loaded the bus to head back to San Jose.

It was gorgeous!

Just getting fried at the pool!

This last weekend (June 14-16) we headed to Manuel Antonio which is one of Costa Rica’s national parks. It was a completely different atmosphere for us! Definitely not a city! There were literally monkeys in the trees right outside our hotel! How neat is that? On a scale of 1-100 of neatness, it is at least a 99. Friday was Mary’s birthday so everyone from the UNK group got dressed up and we went out to get some pizza. It was kinda rainy and we were in an unfamiliar location so it kind of put a damper on the whole 21st party scene so we ended up calling it a night at about 10 pm and went to bed. We got up pretty early the next morning and headed into the national park with a guide. Boy was it worth the extra $5 to get a guide! He spotted so many things I would have never seen on my own! We got to see iguanas, spiders, interesting plants, birds, monkeys, and sloths! We then played on a beach for a few hours. The waves were so calm and it was so nice! There were also little raccoons running around who would steal people’s things! I thought it was kinda funny but then again, none of my stuff got taken by the little rascals. When we were headed back to our hotel we decided to take a shortcut that our guide had told us about before he left us on our own. So we were walking it and eventually we got to this little body of water with a sign that read “Warning: there are crocodiles in the water, Do not get in” So the smart person would pay the few extra bucks and have one of the guys with a boat take us back. But nope, many of the people in our group decided we should just walk across and risk our lives! What?! Next thing you know, we were stripping down to our suits and walked across the water holding our bags above our heads. Sure glad no one got attacked! I think I would miss my leg more than a few dollars. That night when we got back we showered and went out for supper and then just hung around the hotel. Sunday, we got up and laid out on the beach for a few hours and then got on the bus to head home.

While the weekend at the national park was beyond fantastic, we did have our fair share of issues. So, the hotel was a bit of a dive. It didn’t have any clean towels, our room was infested with ants, the floor was as sandy as the beach, their wifi barely worked, and the humidity was so bad all of our things practically melted. Also, the food was beyond sketch! On Saturday night we walked to this little bar and grill place and ordered some hamburgers. The first sign that it was disgusting was the burger was gray! Okay, eww. But, then as I was chewing I literally pulled out this huge piece of I’m not even sure what but it resembled rubber. And on Sunday morning I ordered a ham and cheese omelet and I kid you not, folks, when I cut it open a whole bunch of water came pouring out. It was gross. But I talked myself through it and somehow managed to gag it down.

Where in the World is Wal-Mart?

Now that it has been 2 full weeks of school and a total of 3 weekends here in Costa Rica I think it is safe to say the four girls I live with and I have started to get used to the place and made a few memories together! Last week we discovered Pops. Pops is a Costa Rican ice cream store chain and we had heard people talking about it. We decided to hit it up one day and let’s just say our life here hasn’t been the same since. It is absolutely delicious! The very next day we were walking through the mall and saw a TCBY shop. We still had the urge for some ice cream so we decided to stop. Next thing you know we spotted a Pops store. Gosh darnit! That’s what we really had wanted but I guess TCBY took the edge off. Well until after supper that is. So we had finished devouring our mama-tica’s awesome meal and were sitting there at the table discussing our new found love of Pops. So I just casually suggested we walk the 15 minutes to get ourselves yet another treat. We all kinda looked at each other and next thing you know we were putting our shoes on. We invited our mama along and made a little “family” outing out of it. And yes folks, you did read that right, we ate ice cream 3 times in just over 24 hours.
Our family outing to Pops

Another adventure we’ve been having is trying to find the Wal-Mart! So…as you already figured out from that last sentence, Costa Rica has a Wal-Mart! We kinda want to check it out and compare it to the ones back home! So the first week we were here we embarked on an adventure to find Wal-Mart. We got on what we thought was the right bus and started heading out. Well after about 10 minutes of just sitting on the bus I figured it would probably be a good idea to ask one of the locals and make sure this bus would in fact go to the Wal-Mart. I turned around and asked the woman behind me and for literally like 15 seconds after I had finished my question she just stared at me with a completely blank face. It was kinda uncomfortable. She then was like “Que?” So I repeated the question and she answered, with a stone face, that she didn’t know. So then, Liz started asking the women in front of her and they were like “Chicas! This is the wrong bus!!!!” So we got off at the next stop and just ended up walking around the mall for the day. That was Failed attempt number 1.
This last week on Wednesday we had a few extra hours before dinner and decided to try again. So we asked our mom what bus to take and which stop to get off on. Perfect! We walked to the bus stop and got on. Well we rode, and rode for a good 25 minutes and ended up downtown. What in the world? All of a sudden the bus stopped and the man told us everyone on the bus needed to get off. So we asked the driver how in the world we are supposed to get to Wal-Mart and he told us that the bus just behind his would get us there. So we ran to it and got on. The only confusing thing was that the new bus (that would supposedly actually get us to Wal-Mart) had the same route name on the front as the one we just got off of. What the heck? Well we had faith and just sat there. Next thing you know, everything started to look familiar. We were coming back the way we came! To end this quickly, we figured out that yes, we were on the right route but we had gotten on the East bound bus and not the West bound one that we needed. So, we got off and went home for supper without getting to Wal-Mart once again! Fail. We plan to try this again tomorrow so we will see how it goes!

Also last week I got to miss half a day of school and go on a coffee tour! It was actually quite fun! A bus picked us up from school and we drove about 45 minutes to the plantation. Literally as we were pulling in you could already smell the coffee. We then waited for about 30 minutes for the tour to start and we got to try a few different coffees. They were so good that I enjoyed them even without any form of milk or sugar. That’s pretty amazing! We then walked through the fields and looked at the processing machines and learned about the taste testing process. Apparently they have coffee experts who literally sit there and taste each batch. Our guides were actually quite funny. They put on a little play about the history of it and it was pretty entertaining I’d say. Also it was super legit because they did it in Spanish and English! Each thing they would say they would repeat in both languages.

Last Friday was Mary’s 21st birthday. Liz, Fin, Amanda, and I decided we should do something extra special for her and surprise her. We told our mama about the party beforehand and it was so cute because she was beyond excited for it! She kept asking us about the details and making sure it was still on. So, on Thursday it was really lucky that Mary didn’t go on the coffee tour with us because once we got back we stopped at a grocery store and bought a cake. (It of course down poured as we walked the last 20 minutes home with this cake) J That night, Mary was in the dining room studying so Liz, Fin, Amanda, and I put masquerade masks on, lit 21 candles on the cake, and marched in there singing Happy Birthday. We then presented Mary with her brand new umbrella! Before this, Mary’s umbrella that she has been using was beyond worthless! It was broken at 2 of the hinges and leaked. When she opened the new one, she opened it a little too far and it popped open the wrong way! It was sooo funny! Our papa then came running in from the other room and saved the day.

The next morning at 5 am Fin and Liz filled the sitting room outside our bedroom with balloons and Mary was again surprised J

Did the Weatherman Mention a Little Rain?

So much has happened since the last time I have blogged so I’m just gonna get right into it!
Yesterday (Wednesday) we got to skip class so we could go zip lining!! We were to be at Plaza Cristal at 6 am because that was the time the bus was to leave! So, we decided we had better find this Plaza before we needed to get there at the crack of dawn.  We started Monday afternoon and asked security guards, people on the streets, and police officers and literally no one knew where this place was! So, Tuesday after class our mama gave us directions and we started on our way. We were to take a left at a park called “Las Fresas” so when we came across a park we asked the security guard if that was its name. His response was “I’m sorry, this is my first day on the job, I have no idea.”…What?! How do you not know where you work!? We then asked if he knew where Plaza Cristal was, and of course he did not. So we asked a few more people passing by and only got “I’m sorry, I don’t know” I then spotted a man across the street running. For some reason my heart was dead set on asking this man. I bolted across the busy street, dodging traffic and leaving the other 4 girls behind. I put my hand up and was yelling like an idiot “Tengo una pregunta, tengo una pregunta!” He looked at me like the weirdo I was and just kept running. So soon, I caught up to him and ran alongside him and asked where plaza cristal was. He finally stopped and guess what! HE KNEW WHERE THE PLAZA WAS!!!! So after taking his directions, we walked about 20 more minutes and found the darn thing!

The next morning my alarm went off at literally the butt crack of dawn; 4:48. I got out of bed, threw some clothes on and drank some coffee that our SWEET mama had gotten up to make us. However, I was drinking my first cup and thought hmmm 1 spoon of sugar would be awesome right now. I put one in, tasted it, and yep…it was definitely salt! We then walked the 30 minutes to the plaza and hopped on the buses. In about 2.5 hours, we arrived to the place we were going to zipline! It was awesome! We literally ziplined over the tops of the trees in the forest! Occasionally, while flying through the air, I’d look down and think “yup, if this cord breaks…I’m going to die” Thankfully, though, the cord never broke and our guides were awesome.  There was one line that was literally a tarzan swing! They strapped us up and threw us into the air and we got to swing back and forth 3 amazing times! But, my favorite line was the Superman line. They put us on our bellies and threw us off the platform, over the trees, where we soared through the air like superman for at least 1,000 yards.  I will admit though, being thrown off that thing head first was a little frightening! But, we all lived and I’d say it was a pretty darn awesome day!

Today (Thursday) after class, we had a city tour. We visited an old president’s house (I think his name was Rafael Angel), went to the national park, looked at the National Museum from the outside, visited the national theater, and walked around an art museum. While in the national theater we started being weirdos and imitated the statues for some photos. So, of course, we continued this throughout the art museum. We got some pretty awesome photos I’d say. Below are 2 of the photos we took imitating statues.

Once the tour was over, the bus dropped us off at the school which is about a 30 minute walk to our house. One thing I haven’t mentioned in my blogs yet about Costa Rica is the fact that it is beyond rainy here! Right now is considered “winter” for them. This means it is still super-hot but it never fails, it down pours for at least an hour each day. Sometimes it will rain all afternoon and when I said down pour earlier…boy did I mean it! So, anyway, we got dropped off and of course the clouds came in and it began to pour. We all got out our umbrellas (We do not leave the house without them anymore) but let me tell you…it wasn’t enough! It was sooo funny because we were all just miserable! The puddles we walked through were literally up to our ankles! And when cars would pass we would of course get splashed! So we finally got home, drenched and all but Amanda and I needed to get to a bank to switch over some money from dollars to colones. (This was a dire need as we leave for a resort tomorrow). So, Mary, Amanda and I changed t-shirts, put on some flip flops instead of sneakers and again went out into the pouring rain and walked ANOTHER 30 minutes to the nearest bank! When we got there, I asked the man if we could switch money and he let us in. The lady then came to the desk and explained we needed an account there so she sent us to the bank next door. I sort of felt bad though because we were so drenched that we literally flooded their tile lobby! Poor people didn’t even get business from us and we just left puddles!

Then, tonight, our mama made us some rice and beans and some pork for supper. However, while we were eating, Amanda made a sort of choking noise so we all looked over and this girl was literally sweating and crying! Hahahahah there must have been a pepper in the rice that she bit on and she could not stop sweating! The other 4 of us weren’t too sympathetic though because we all bust out laughing. At one point she even coughed and had to go upstairs to blow her nose because it cleaned out her sinuses so well!

Tomorrow, we have class and leave for a resort on the beach. There is a possibility they will have bungee jumping and I think I’m going to go for it ! Hope I don’t die!

The Mysterious Light

I’m just going to jump straight into this story. No intro, nothing. So, Mary and I share a bedroom and Amanda has the bedroom next door to us. The very first night we were here I chose the bed against the window and Mary took the bed that is straight in from the door. We unpacked all of our belongings and went to bed. Well, as we were laying there I was staring up at the ceiling and noticed that there was a light shining beyond the light bulb above Mary’s head. This was so weird! All of the lights were off, but with the open space around the light bulb I could see that there was what looked like a room above us. So I immediately got a little scared and was like “MARY! LOOK!” She got up and as soon as I went over to the bulb to investigate further, the light shut off! So, Mary being Mary made fun of me at breakfast the next morning. I tried to explain my side that I firmly believe there is a “room above the light bulb” But, this sounded so crazy obviously NOONE believed me!

Then, that night Mary went to bed a little before me. When I finally laid down, the first thing I of course did was look up at the bulb and sure enough the light was on and you could see the room! So I tried to wake Mary but she was like a rock and would not wake up! So I yelled for Amanda and she came over and we were both hovering over Mary’s bed (she still did not wake up!) But, Amanda became a believer. She immediately got the heebie jeebies and agreed with me: there is a room above the light bulb. She left, and there I was lying there wide awake staring at the hole with the light and freaking myself out. All I could do was picture a face appearing and I was thinking of every possible thing this light and room could be! “Why was there a room up there? Why did the light only come on at certain times? Why would it shut off? How big was  this room? Who would be up there?” And all of a sudden Amanda came storming in and was like “Nicki did you hear all that yelling and barking? I thought someone was downstairs in the house!” Greattttt… now I was lying there looking at this light, listening to every dog in Costa Rica bark, and straining to hear if I could hear people talking. All of a sudden, *Boop* the light went off! What in the world?! I looked at the time and it was 10:28 p.m. At this point I decided I would ask our host mom the next morning.
The following morning Amanda and I filled Mary in on what happened and she still wouldn’t budge. She didn’t believe us! So we went to breakfast and I asked our mama-tica if there was anything above our room like another room or crawl space. I was absolutely sure she would know of this mysterious room and fill us all in and victory would be mine. But nope, my luck does not swing that way. She looked super confused and told us there was nothing up there. But there is! So I swore Liz and Fin that that night, if the light turned on I would run down and get them so they could see it with their own eyes!

Sure enough, that night, I was able to prove to them all that this room/crawl space does in fact exist!!!!! I was sitting on the couch just outside our rooms and Amanda happened to peer in Mary and I’s room. She came running out and all she had to say was “Nicki”. I knew what was going on! I knew I had to move fast so that the girls could see it before the light turned off! I got up so fast and practically jumped down the flight of starts, and banged on Liz and Fin’s room.  They were pretty much already half way out of bed at this time because they heard me coming (I really made a racket). The second Liz and Fin looked up into the light bulb, they were sketched out! None of us could figure it out! Why in the world was there this room that had a light that our host mom doesn’t know about?!?! Confusion to the max and of course goosebumps crawled up all of our spines. (This includes Mary. J She claims she wasn’t nervous at all but let’s be real, it was weird!)

Well we were all talking about what it could be and of course making jokes such as our host family was conspiring against us and that was why our mama told us there was nothing up there. We even went as far as to say this conspiracy must be the reason why we don’t have internet at the house; they don’t want us to have any contact with the outside world. DUN, DUN, DUN. Another theory was that it was some sort of supernatural being that had a spell on Mary which was why she acted completely unbothered by the room and was unable to wake up the night I showed it to Amanda. Really, it was a mystery and nothing made sense!!!

We kept exploring to see if we could find the source of the light and went into Amanda’s room next door. We put our hands up above her bulb and realized, yes there was a floor up there with space so there must be a room above her room too but…No light! Well after making this discovery we soon figured out the source….Be prepared for a total let down. There are no aliens, our family is not conspiring against us, no homeless man, no supernatural being with a spell on Mary…nothing. It is as simple as this: When Amanda’s bedroom light is on, the light turns on above our room. When our light is on, the light turns on above Amanda’s room. So, since Amanda is a night owl, I would lie in bed staring at that light in the room above. When she would decide to go to bed and turn her light out, the light would *Boop* disappear.

A Lemon Tree and a Pet Turtle

Well, we made it to Costa Rica!!! Traveling here went completely smooth until we got to the Costa Rica airport and were trying to get through customs. The line was beyond long and Mary and I had to pee like race horses. So, us being idiots, thought “Oh if Amanda and Tara hold our bags, we will make it back before the line even moves” Nope…didn't work that way! We got back from the bathrooms and realized they had moved really far up in line! There were those dividers that snake the line back and forth so we weren't able to just nonchalantly walk up to Tara and Amanda. We had to resort to crawling. I still had my backpack on so I was like this monster turtle crawling through peoples’ legs with Mary not far behind. I accidentally hit one of the poles, it made a clatter, and next thing I know some lady slapped me really hard and yelled “ HEY YOU!! GET OUTTA HERE!” I didn't even look, I just scurried along the floor even faster. But after that little mishap, we were able to check in to the country, get our bags and we were on our way to our new family!
I live in a neighborhood that is about 30 minutes walking distance away from the school and it is just gorgeous! We have a backyard patio that is surrounded by plants and trees with a hammock! These trees are not just any ol’ trees either. One is a lemon tree that our host mom picks every so often to make lemonade and cook with. In addition to the jungle of trees and exotic plants, we have a pet turtle!!! Her name is Matilda and she is so cute! She doesn’t have a cage or anything, she just wanders around the whole backyard and eats insects and sleeps in the dirt.
Our backyard!

Matilda

Mary, Amanda, and I share the 2 bedrooms upstairs and two other UNK students, Jen (Fin) and Liz, share a downstairs bedroom. Our host mom and dad are absolutely adorable! Our mom is so attentive to us and anything we would possibly need. She is also the best cook in the world! (Sorry mom ;p) This morning we were greeted with a full table of fresh fruit, cinnamon raisin bread, coffee, and juice and for supper we had salad, a chicken and rice dish with homemade chili salsa over top, chips and beans, and homemade juice.
Left to Right:  Me, Amanda, Fin, Liz, Mary

This morning after breakfast we went to mass. Once that was over, our host mom explained to us how to take the buses and we split ways. Amanda, Mary, Fin, Liz, and I explored a little. We went to see our school, checked out the mall, and walked around all the streets that surround our neighborhood. We were hoping to find a nearby internet café because our house doesn’t have internet! I can already feel the shakes of withdrawal coming on due to the decrease in Facebook time.
Trying on ridiculously tall high heels in the mall!
